Whatever the case, Snake is superior to a world full of ghosts, monsters, psychics, giant robots, and killer AIs. Whether this is merely the case of his tried-and-true badassery or also of an inexplicable innate nature can be debated.
Hands down, the undisputed champion of this trope when it comes to this series. Handsome as hell, muscular as hell, manly as hell. And age'll be damned—he's still a certified hunk even after he sports gray hairs. This man's truly one of a kind. Mentally, spiritually, and physically, Snake is put through the wringer throughout the series.
He's seen nearly all of his comrades in arms die or imprisoned, endured repeated torture, PTSD, and the realization he won't live to see age He doesn't complain, but he has a dark and brooding side seen most clearly in the original Metal Gear Solid.
War transforms us, into beasts. Snake's a good agent, but chafes at being kept in the dark about his mission. He naturally keeps Raiden in the dark about absolutely everything in MGS2. To be fair nobody trusts Raiden because of his standing with the Patriots Iconic Item: Snake somehow manages to smuggle his cigs into every mission, despite being forbidden to bring anything along.

Sons of Libertyhe refers to the magazines as having "educational value" when trying to convince Raiden that having them isn't that bad, and if the player reads the magazines in the model viewer in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriotshis Psyche Gauge goes up. Because of his aging problem in the latter game, it also in a way overlaps into Dirty Old Man.
He's also not a fan of rookie soldiers. FOXHOUND trained him to procure weapon on-site and leave no trace; they didn't prepare him for some trigger-happy fool blundering into his line of fire.
A forelock is always sticking out of place on Snake's forehead, though Snake himself is far from stupid. We only have Mantis' word that the seemingly heroic Snake is more evil than Liquid. Mantis' rather harsh judgment of Snake is probably a holdover from when Snake was a Deep-Immersion Gaming Audience Surrogate in the original Metal Gear games; a bunch of potshots were aimed at Snake because of the average video-game player's sadistic tendencies when playing gamespresumably so that the conversations about war would seem more relevant if the player was the focus.
Because of this, the games never bothered actually portraying these tendencies on Snake's part, so that when he grew into an actual character he didn't quite live up to those Blood Knight credentials.
While Big Boss does watch Snake attempt to shoot himself, Snake stops himself from doing so, after which Big Boss reveals himself and congratulates him for not going through with it. Solid Snake is a designer baby made with the DNA of "the greatest soldier ever. With President Sears' fall from grace and the publication of Nastaha's tell-all book, Snake's fame reached its zenith. This was the last straw for the Patriots, who opt to remove Snake rather than allow him to continue discrediting them.

Snake Eater took the franchise out of metallic facilities and into the wilderness. You wore camouflage suits to hide inside shrubbery. You could carve a crocodile into a cool hat. In the single best sequence in the game and maybe in the franchise, you get into a sniper duel in the middle of the forest, and potentially spend hours crawling around on the ground hunting out any sign of your opponent.
If you save when the sniper duel starts, and wait a week before you play again, then The End dies of old age. Snake Eater is probably the best Metal Gear Solid game. Kojima has packed an impressive and insane array of pop culture homages into his little spy-tech action series: When you play enough Metal Gear Solid, you realize that Kojima is maybe the only guy on Earth who decided that Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns and James Bond movies and superhero comic books and Isaac Asimov science-fiction novels were all the same, deep down.
Like most people, I tried playing Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Like some people, I gave up after a couple hours. Guns of the Patriots is a feast for mythology nuts and a chore for everyone else. Kojima had talked about leaving after Snake Eater, and he talked about leaving after Guns of the Patriots. When the game arrived init sold fine and got fine reviews. But you had the sense that Kojima had become George Lucas doing the prequels — or Peter Jackson doing his prequels, to pick our latest archetype for a brilliant creator held hostage by his most popular creation.
The Phantom Pain, and Guns of the Patriots makes sense. Patriots was all-story, all the time: At least 15 hours in, Phantom Pain is the precise opposite. You play as the Snake from Snake Eater, 20 years older, missing one limb and one eye. It is the ultimate stealth-mission playpen: You can ride your horse in any direction and find a few Russian soldiers to sneak up on. What story there is feels very melodramatic — I point you to the Moby Dick references — but the game feels like it has been purposefully designed as a playing experience.
If Metal Gear Solid argued that videogames should be movies, Phantom Pain explicitly takes the TV episode as its cross-medium reference: Every mission has its own credit sequence, and can play out as a distinct two-or-three-hour node of gameplay set off from the main storyline. If so, mission accomplished. But by giving the player so much freedom, Phantom Pain also loses the hallucinatory, breakneck narrative structure of the earlier games, which unfolded in nightmare realtime.
